Concrete is sold by volume, poured by area, and priced by both.

Every concrete estimate starts as length times width times thickness, and the thickness is where most people go wrong. An inch of extra depth on a 400 square foot slab is another 1.2 cubic yards, which is roughly a third of a truck. Suppliers sell in cubic yards and charge a short-load fee below about 3 yards, so the difference between ordering 2.8 and 3.1 changes the price per yard as well as the total.

The second thing driving cost is what goes under and through the slab. A compacted gravel base, wire mesh or rebar, and control joints cut at the right spacing are the difference between a slab that lasts thirty years and one that cracks in its second winter. None of them are optional, and all of them are the first items a cheap quote leaves out.

Settle this before you calculate

Thickness, from the load
4 inches for foot traffic, 5 once light trucks park on it, 6 for RVs or heavy vehicles. ACI 332 sets the residential floor.
Inside the forms, not outside
Measure the space the concrete will fill. Measuring the outside of the form boards overstates volume by the board width on every side.
Whether an old slab comes out
Tear-out runs $2 to $4 per square foot and is usually quoted separately, so it has to be in your number from the start.

Where the estimate goes wrong

Ordering the exact calculated volume
Add 5 to 10% for waste. Spillage, uneven subgrade and form deflection all eat concrete, and a second small delivery costs more than the first one did.
Treating joint spacing as optional
Cut control joints at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, capped at 15 feet, within 4 to 12 hours of finishing. Concrete will crack; joints decide where.
Comparing bids at different thicknesses
Ask every bidder to price the same thickness, base depth and reinforcement. A cheaper quote is usually a thinner slab.
