Concrete Countertop Mistakes to Avoid

Using regular concrete mix instead of countertop mix

Regular concrete has large gravel aggregates that create a rough, pitted surface. Countertop mixes use fine sand and higher cement ratios specifically designed for smooth, dense finishes.

Not vibrating the form enough

Air bubbles trapped against the form face cause pinholes and voids in the finished surface. Vibrate for at least 5 minutes using an orbital sander pressed flat against all form walls and the bottom.

Removing forms too early

Wait at least 24 to 48 hours before removing forms. Early removal causes edge chipping and cracking. The concrete needs to reach initial set strength before handling.

Skipping the sealer

Unsealed concrete absorbs water, oils, and stains within minutes. Apply a food-safe penetrating sealer within 5 to 7 days of pouring, and reseal every 1 to 3 years.

Making sections too long without joints

Sections longer than 8 feet are prone to cracking during curing and are extremely heavy to move. Break long runs into 6 to 8 foot sections joined with silicone at seams.
