Pro Tips

1

2 inches for resurfacing over existing asphalt, 3 to 4 inches for new driveways, 6+ inches for commercial lots.

2

Compact the gravel base to 95% density before paving. Poor compaction causes ruts within the first year.

3

Need sub-base material? Use our crusher run calculator to estimate gravel for the foundation layer.

4

Sealcoat new asphalt after 6 to 12 months, then every 2 to 3 years. $0.15 to $0.25 per sq ft extends lifespan 5 to 8 years.

5

Comparing options? Our asphalt vs concrete calculator breaks down the long-term cost difference.

6

Considering concrete instead? Our concrete driveway cost calculator breaks down material, labor, and finishing costs.

7

Adding curbs to your asphalt driveway? Our concrete curb calculator estimates concrete borders and edging.

8

Pave when temperatures are above 50 degrees F and rising. Asphalt cools too fast in cold weather and won't compact properly.

How the Calculator Works

1

Enter your paving area length, width, and desired thickness in inches (or cm for metric).

2

Select asphalt type and waste factor. Different types have different densities and costs.

3

Get tons, cubic yards, truckloads, cost range, and sealcoat quantity instantly.

Formulas

Volume (cu ft) = Length x Width x (Thickness / 12) x (1 + Waste%)

Weight (lbs) = Volume x Density (145 lbs/cu ft for hot mix)

Tons = Weight / 2,000

Quick Reference

1 ton covers
~80 sq ft at 2"
Hot mix density
145 lbs/cu ft
1 truckload
20 tons
Sealcoat coverage
1 gal per 80 sq ft
Min paving temp
50 degrees F

Common Questions

How many tons of asphalt per square foot?

About 0.0125 tons (25 lbs) per sq ft at 2 inches thick. A 480 sq ft driveway needs about 6 tons.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

2 to 3 inches for resurfacing. 3 to 4 inches over gravel base for new residential driveways. 6+ inches for commercial parking lots.

How much does asphalt cost per ton?

$100 to $150 per ton for standard hot mix delivered. Polymer modified costs $130 to $200. Recycled asphalt (RAP) is cheapest at $40 to $80.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost?

$3 to $7 per sq ft installed. A 12x40 (480 sq ft) driveway costs $1,440 to $3,360 total including labor.

How long does asphalt last?

15 to 20 years with proper maintenance (sealcoating every 2 to 3 years). Without sealcoat, expect 10 to 12 years.

When should I sealcoat new asphalt?

Wait 6 to 12 months after installation for the asphalt to cure fully. Then sealcoat every 2 to 3 years.

Is recycled asphalt any good?

RAP works well for driveways and rural roads at 40 to 60% less cost. It is not suitable for high-traffic commercial lots or roads with heavy trucks.

What is the difference between asphalt and blacktop?

Asphalt uses a coarser aggregate mix and is stronger. Blacktop uses finer stone and more tar, making it smoother but less durable. Both are petroleum-based.

Asphalt Coverage per Ton

How much does a ton of asphalt cover? Use this reference to quickly estimate tonnage by thickness.

ThicknessSq Ft per TonTons per 100 Sq Ft
2"801.25
3"531.88
4"402.50
6"273.75

Based on standard hot mix asphalt at 145 lbs per cubic foot. Porous and recycled mixes will differ slightly due to lower density.

Real-World Asphalt Examples

Residential Driveway

40x12 ft, 3" thick
Result: ~6.5 tons, $650 - $975

Standard single-car driveway over compacted gravel base. 3 inches is the minimum for new residential paving.

Double-Wide Driveway

40x20 ft, 3" thick
Result: ~10.8 tons, $1,080 - $1,620

Fits two vehicles side by side. At this size, a single truckload covers the job with material to spare.

Small Parking Lot

60x40 ft, 4" thick
Result: ~29 tons, $2,900 - $4,350

Fits 8 to 10 parking spaces. 4 inches handles regular car traffic. Add 6 inches for areas with truck loading.

Resurfacing

40x12 ft, 2" thick
Result: ~4.3 tons, $430 - $645

Overlay on existing asphalt that is still structurally sound. 2 inches is the standard resurfacing thickness.

Asphalt Mistakes That Cost You Money

Paving too thin on bare ground

2 inches on bare ground fails within 2 years. New driveways need 3 to 4 inches minimum over a compacted gravel base.

Skipping the gravel base

6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel prevents sinking and cracking. Without it, asphalt settles unevenly within the first season.

Paving in cold weather

Below 50 degrees F the mix cools too fast for proper compaction. The surface looks fine but develops ruts and cracks within months.

Not sealcoating

UV and water penetration reduce lifespan by 5 to 8 years. Sealcoating costs $0.15 to $0.25 per sq ft and pays for itself many times over.

Ordering exact tons needed

Always add 10% for waste, uneven base, and compaction loss. Running short mid-job means a cold joint that cracks within a year.
