Flooring is bought by the box, and the box is what makes the waste factor matter.

Floor area divided by coverage per box gives the count, but you can only buy whole boxes, so the rounding is part of the estimate rather than an afterthought. A room needing 10.3 boxes is an 11 box order, and that spare 0.7 of a box is most of your cut allowance already accounted for.

Layout decides the rest. A straight run parallel to the longest wall wastes least, around 5 to 8%. A diagonal costs 15%, and a herringbone or chevron pattern can reach 20% because every board meets an edge at an angle. Pick the pattern before you order, not after.

Settle this before you calculate

Coverage per box, not per plank
Boxes vary between 18 and 30 square feet by product. It is the only number that converts area into an order.
Layout direction and pattern
Straight along the long wall wastes least. Diagonal adds about 15% and herringbone about 20%.
Rooms, doorways and thresholds
Measure each room separately and add the doorway runs. One combined figure hides the awkward transitions where waste concentrates.

Where the estimate goes wrong

Ordering exactly the calculated area
Add 8% for a straight lay and 15 to 20% for a pattern, then round up to whole boxes. Off-cuts from one room rarely fit the next.
Mixing batches or dye lots
Shade varies between production runs on tile, laminate and engineered board alike. Order the whole job at once and keep one spare box.
Ignoring subfloor flatness
Most manufacturers require flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Levelling compound is a separate cost and it is not optional under a click-lock floor.
