Not in this number

Epoxy flooring failures that start under the coating
Almost nothing on this list is the epoxy's fault. Five of the six are the slab, the weather or the clock, which is why the cheapest floor to fix is the one whose prep was priced honestly in the first place.
Skipping the Moisture Test
A $30 calcium chloride test takes 72 hours but prevents delamination. If MVER exceeds 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours, use a moisture-mitigating primer.
Acid Etching Over Sealed or Painted Concrete
Acid etch only works on bare, porous concrete. Sealed or painted floors need diamond grinding ($1.50 to $2.50/sq ft) to create a bonding profile.
Applying in Cold or Humid Conditions
Below 50F, epoxy stays tacky for days. Above 85% humidity, amine blush weakens the bond. The slab is often 10F cooler than the air.
Mixing Too Much Material at Once
Epoxy has a 20 to 45 minute pot life once mixed. Work in batches and have a helper rolling while you mix the next batch.
Not Back-Rolling After Application
Back-roll each section with a 3/8" nap roller within 5 to 10 minutes to pop bubbles and create a uniform 8 to 12 mil film.
Driving on Epoxy Too Soon
Foot traffic is safe at 24 hours, but vehicles need 72 hours minimum. Hot tires soften partially-cured epoxy and peel it off.

Epoxy flooring cost by slab condition: prep against coating
Every epoxy page on the internet quotes a price for the coating. The coating is the half you choose. The slab is the half that decides whether the floor is still there in five years, and it is the only line in the estimate that changes without you changing product.

What the prep line does not buy
That prep figure covers etch-level work: sweep, degrease, acid etch at $0.50/sq ft, rinse. It does not cover opening a sealed, painted or troweled-smooth slab, which needs diamond grinding at $1.50 to $2.50/sq ft.
On 576 sq ft that is $864 to $1,440, or 6 to 10 times the poor-condition prep line above, and the same order as the coating on this floor. Ground rather than etched, prep stops being a rounding error and becomes about 47% of the job.

The input this page does not have
Concrete on grade passes water vapour upward for its whole life, and epoxy is a vapour barrier laid on top of it. Trapped vapour lifts the coating off in sheets, which is the most common way a good-looking floor fails a year later.
A slab moisture test is a measurement this page cannot make for you. Nothing you type above tells us whether your slab is wet. A calcium chloride kit is $30 and takes 72 hours; above 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours, in the test's own units, the slab needs a mitigating primer at $0.50 to $1.00/sq ft before any coating goes down.
If the test fails, no coating on the list further down fixes it. A polished concrete floor has no film to lift, which is why it is the usual answer on a damp slab.

How long does epoxy flooring last?
Water-based epoxy lasts 3 to 5 years under normal garage traffic. 100% solid epoxy lasts 15 to 20 years even with forklift traffic and chemical spills.
Can I DIY epoxy my garage floor?
Yes, with proper prep. A DIY 2-car garage runs $200 to $500 in materials. Pro install costs $2,000 to $4,000 but includes diamond grinding for better adhesion.
Acid etch or diamond grind for prep?
Diamond grinding creates a CSP-2 to CSP-3 profile that bonds 3x better. Acid etching works on new, clean concrete only. Grinding is mandatory for sealed or stained floors.
How long before I can park on epoxy?
Foot traffic at 24 hours, vehicles at 72 hours minimum. Full chemical resistance at 7 days. Below 60F, add 24 to 48 hours to each milestone.
Epoxy vs polyurea?
Epoxy ($3 to $7/sq ft) is harder and more chemical-resistant but takes 7 days to cure. Polyurea ($5 to $10/sq ft) cures in 24 hours and handles UV better. Also consider polished concrete for a coating-free option.
Does concrete moisture cause problems?
Yes, moisture is the #1 cause of epoxy failure. Run a calcium chloride test ($30) before coating. High moisture requires a mitigating primer ($0.50 to $1.00/sq ft).
How much does metallic epoxy cost?
Metallic epoxy runs $6 to $12/sq ft installed, about 2 to 3x standard epoxy. Contractors charge a $500 to $1,000 premium for the artistic technique.
Can you epoxy over existing coatings?
No. Old paint, sealer, or epoxy must be removed first. Budget $1.50 to $3.00/sq ft for grinding or shot blasting before recoating. Use our stain calculator if you are considering a stain finish instead.

Epoxy flooring prep rules that decide whether it holds
None of these change the number above. All of them change whether the floor you paid for is still bonded in three years.

Run a calcium chloride moisture test ($30/kit) before coating. Moisture rates above 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours, in the test's own units, cause delamination within 6 to 12 months.
Apply epoxy only when concrete is 50 to 85F and at least 5F above dew point. Below 50F, cure time jumps from 24 hours to 72+.
Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield ($0.30/sq ft) is water-based and lasts 3 to 5 years. Epoxy-Coat ($0.85/sq ft) is 100% solids rated for 15+ years. Solids content is the number that separates them, so read it off the data sheet rather than the shelf price.
Broadcast vinyl flakes at 1 lb per 50 sq ft to hide imperfections and add slip resistance. A $40 bag covers a 2-car garage.
Allow a full 7-day cure before parking vehicles. Early tire contact causes hot-tire pickup where the coating peels in tire-shaped patches. Consider polished concrete as a maintenance-free alternative.
