Shingle Bundle Ordering Guide

A shingle order is more than the main roof field. Count bundles, starter strips, ridge caps, and a small repair stash before the delivery truck arrives.

Pro Tips

1

Enter roof surface area, not house floor area. Use the roofing calculator first if you still need pitch-adjusted roof area.

2

Treat the waste input as the total waste allowance. A simple gable often starts near 10%, while hips and valleys need more.

3

Starter strips and ridge caps are not the same as field shingles. Keep them on the order list so the first course and ridge lines seal correctly.

4

Order the same product, color, and lot when possible. A small repair stash is easier than matching weathered shingles later.

5

Use the roofing calculator for whole-roof materials, and this page when bundle count is the main question.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator assumes you already know total roof surface area. It adds your chosen waste allowance, converts to roofing squares, then multiplies by the selected shingle bundle coverage.

Order area

roof area x (1 + waste%)

Squares

order area / 100

Field bundles

squares x bundles per square

Starter and ridge cap bundles use the linear lengths you enter. Underlayment rolls use the waste-included order area as a planning allowance.

Shingle Type Planning

3-tab$25 - $35 /bundle, 3 bundles/square

Basic flat profile, often used on tight budgets.

Architectural$30 - $50 /bundle, 3 bundles/square

The common upgrade for most reroofs.

Impact-resistant$40 - $65 /bundle, 3 bundles/square

Common in hail-prone markets. Confirm local insurance rules.

Designer$45 - $75 /bundle, 4 bundles/square

Heavier specialty profiles can use more bundles per square.

Real-World Shingle Examples

Small ranch

1,200 sq ft, gable, architectural, 10% waste

13.2 squares, 40 bundles

Add 2 starter bundles and 2 ridge cap bundles for a simple roof.

Two-story gable

2,000 sq ft, architectural, 10% waste

22.0 squares, 66 bundles

Default setup. The calculator includes the full waste allowance once.

Hip roof in hail country

2,500 sq ft, impact-resistant, 15% waste

28.8 squares, 87 bundles

More cuts at hips, plus heavier bundles for delivery planning.

Complex designer roof

3,000 sq ft, designer, 20% waste

36.0 squares, 144 bundles

Designer products can use 4 bundles per square, so pallets get heavy fast.

Shingle Calculator FAQ

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Many 3-tab and architectural products use 3 bundles per 100 sq ft square. Some designer or specialty products use 4 or another product-specific coverage.

How many bundles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?

For architectural shingles with 10% waste, plan about 66 field bundles before starter strips, ridge caps, and a small repair stash.

Is this different from the Roofing Calculator?

Yes. Shingle focuses on asphalt bundle ordering. Roofing handles the broader roof takeoff, including pitch, material type, and whole-roof quantities.

Should I count starter strips separately?

Yes. Starter strips go along eaves and often rakes. They protect the first course against wind uplift and are usually packaged separately.

How much do shingles weigh?

A bundle commonly weighs about 60 to 80 lb. A 66-bundle architectural order can weigh roughly 4,620 lb before accessories.

Does the waste factor include roof style?

Yes. The waste input is the total waste allowance. Choosing gable, hip, or complex fills a suggested starting value, but it is not added a second time.

Shingle Ordering Mistakes

Adding waste twice

Use one total waste percentage. If a roof shape preset sets 15%, do not add another 15% on top.

Forgetting accessory shingles

Starter strips and ridge caps are often separate products with separate coverage rates.

Ignoring delivery weight

A medium architectural order can weigh several thousand pounds. Plan delivery location before pallets arrive.

Assuming every bundle covers the same area

Check the product label. Designer shingles and specialty profiles may not match standard bundle assumptions.
