How we verify our calculatorsCDX is the standard for subfloors and wall sheathing. The "X" means it is rated for exterior exposure during construction.
Plan your stud layout before sheathing with our framing calculator to ensure proper nailing patterns.
Compare rough lumber pricing with our board foot calculator when deciding between plywood and dimensional lumber.
OSB costs 25 to 40% less than plywood but swells when wet. Use CDX or marine grade for any moisture-exposed application.
Marine grade plywood has waterproof glue and void-free veneers. It costs 2 to 3 times more but is essential for boat building, docks, and permanent outdoor structures.
Buy full sheets and cut on site. Pre-cut plywood costs 30 to 50% more per square foot than full sheets.

Formulas
Total Area = Length x Width x (1 + Waste%)
Sheets = ceil(Total Area / Sheet Area)
Cost = Sheets x Grade Cost x Thickness Factor
How many sheets for a 12x12 floor?
5 sheets of 4x8 plywood (4.5 sheets + 10% waste). Standard 3/4" CDX for subfloors.
CDX vs OSB for subfloors?
CDX plywood is stronger and more moisture-resistant. OSB is cheaper but swells at edges when wet. CDX is preferred for quality subfloors.
What thickness for subfloors?
3/4" (23/32") for joists on 16" centers. 5/8" works for 12" joist spacing. Never use 1/2" for subfloors.
How much does plywood cost?
CDX 3/4" 4x8 sheets run $30 to $50. OSB is $20 to $35. Marine grade costs $80 to $130. Prices fluctuate with lumber markets.
What is the weight of a plywood sheet?
A 3/4" 4x8 CDX sheet weighs about 60 lbs. 1/2" weighs about 40 lbs. OSB is slightly heavier than plywood at the same thickness.
4x8 vs 4x10 sheets?
4x8 is standard for walls and most floors. 4x10 reduces joints on taller walls. 4x12 is used for tall commercial walls and cathedral ceilings.
Can I use MDF for subfloors?
No. MDF swells permanently when exposed to any moisture. It is for interior cabinetry, shelving, and trim only.
How do I calculate plywood waste?
10% for rectangular areas with straight cuts. 15% for irregular shapes, angles, or lots of cutouts. Always round up to the next full sheet.
Standard bedroom subfloor on 16" joist centers. 3/4" CDX is the industry standard for residential subfloors.
Two-car garage wall sheathing. 1/2" CDX provides structural bracing and a nailing surface for siding.
Medium ranch-style roof. 1/2" CDX for standard rafter spacing. Use 5/8" for wider rafter gaps or heavy snow loads.
Kitchen cabinet backing material. 1/4" BC sanded gives a smooth interior finish at minimal weight.
Using OSB in wet locations
OSB edge swell is permanent and unfixable. Once the edges absorb moisture, the board never returns to its original shape. Use CDX or marine grade for any area exposed to water or high humidity.
Wrong thickness for the application
1/2" subfloor bounces under foot traffic and feels spongy. Always use 3/4" for subfloors on 16" joist centers. Check your local building code for minimum thickness requirements.
Not staggering joints
Aligned seams create weak lines in the structure that flex under load. Stagger plywood sheets so end joints are offset by at least 4 feet from the adjacent row.
Storing plywood flat on wet ground
Plywood warps and delaminates within days when stored on damp surfaces. Stack sheets on stickers (spacer strips) elevated off the ground and cover the top only.
Forgetting to account for waste and cutouts
Always add 10 to 15% for waste. Rectangular rooms with straight cuts need 10%. Irregular shapes, angles, or lots of cutouts like stairwells need 15% or more.
