Pro Tips

1

Small river rock (1-3") weighs about 2,700 lbs per cubic yard, while larger 3-5" rock weighs around 2,500 lbs. Always verify your truck's payload capacity before self-pickup.

2

For dry creek beds, layer 4 to 6" of cobble on a 2-inch gravel base. The Landscaping Network's river rock guide recommends lining the channel with 5 oz/sq yd woven fabric to prevent soil migration.

3

Install steel edging (4" minimum height) before spreading any rock. This $1.50 to $2.00/linear foot investment prevents migration and cuts annual maintenance by 80%.

4

Not sure how much area your rock will cover? Our Rock Coverage Calculator converts between tons and square footage for any rock type and depth.

5

For smaller decorative stone under 1/2", our Pea Gravel Calculator provides better estimates with compaction factors included.

6

Rinse all river rock with a garden hose after spreading. Quarry dust mutes natural colors by 30 to 40%, and a simple wash reveals the true tones.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator multiplies your project's length, width, and desired depth to determine total volume in cubic feet, then converts to cubic yards by dividing by 27. It applies a density conversion factor specific to your selected rock size. Small rocks (1-2") pack more tightly at 1.35 tons per cubic yard, while large cobble (4-8") has more void space at 1.25 tons per cubic yard. Your selected overage percentage is applied to the final tonnage to account for irregular bed shapes, border tucking, and minor settling.

The density values used in this calculator are based on industry-standard measurements for tumbled river rock with typical moisture content. Wet rock can weigh 5-10% more, which is why bulk suppliers weigh material at the yard and may charge slightly more than the dry-weight estimate. The weed barrier fabric calculation adds 10% to your area to ensure adequate overlap at seams (minimum 6 inches recommended by most fabric manufacturers).

Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length x Width x (Depth in inches / 12)

Cubic Yards = Volume / 27

Tons = Cubic Yards x Rock Density x (1 + Waste %)

Quick Reference

Small rock density
1.35 t/yd³
Medium rock density
1.30 t/yd³
Large rock density

Frequently Asked Questions About River Rock

How much river rock per square foot?

At 2-inch depth, about 25 to 30 lbs per square foot (1 ton per 75 sq ft). The Concrete Network's coverage guide recommends adding 10% for edges.

How much does a cubic yard weigh?

Small (1-2"): 2,700 lbs. Medium (2-4"): 2,600 lbs. Large cobble (4-8"): 2,500 lbs. Polished rock is denser at 2,700 lbs per cubic yard.

How deep for a dry creek bed?

4 to 6 inches of 3-8" cobble over a 2-inch compacted gravel base. Line with landscape fabric and ensure 1 to 2% slope for water flow.

Do I need edging?

Yes. Without edging, rock migrates 6 to 12 inches into adjacent areas within a year. Steel or aluminum edging (4" tall) costs $1.50 to $2.00/linear foot.

River rock vs pea gravel?

River rock (1-4") creates bold texture for beds and water features at $80 to $150/ton. Pea gravel (1/4-1/2") is smoother and walkable at $25 to $50/ton.

Can I put it directly on soil?

Never. Rocks sink into ground within 1 to 2 seasons and weeds grow through gaps. Always install woven landscape fabric (3+ oz/sq yd) underneath.

How is river rock delivered?

Under 1 ton: heavy-duty truck pickup. 1 to 10 tons: dump truck delivery ($75 to $150/trip). Over 10 tons: most suppliers include free delivery.

River Rock Estimates for Common Projects

Backyard Dry Creek Bed

40×3 ft, 4" deep
Material: 2.4 tons medium/large mixCost: $240-$360

Winding 40-foot dry creek bed using 70% medium (2-4") and 30% large cobble (4-8") over compacted gravel base and DeWitt Pro-5 fabric. Steel edging on both sides. Two-person project completed in one weekend.

Front Yard Garden Beds

350 sq ft, 3" deep
Material: 4.2 tons small river rockCost: $336-$420

Three foundation beds around the front entrance using polished 1-3" river rock for a clean, modern look. Installed over 4 oz woven fabric with aluminum edging. Professional delivery ($125) for the 4+ ton load was essential.

Side Yard Pathway

20×4 ft, 3" deep
Material: 1.0 ton medium river rockCost: $100-$150

Functional walkway between gate and backyard using 2-4" medium river rock. Bordered by pressure-treated 4x4 timbers staked every 4 feet. Compacted 2-inch gravel sub-base prevents shifting underfoot.

River Rock Mistakes That Cost You Money

Skipping landscape fabric underneath

Without fabric, rock sinks into soil within 1 to 2 seasons. Use 3+ oz/sq yd commercial fabric with 6-inch seam overlaps, pinned every 2 feet.

No containment edging

Rock migrates 6 to 12 inches per year without edging. Install 4-inch steel or aluminum edging before spreading any stone.

Ordering exact quantities with no overage

Running short means a second delivery at $75 to $150, possibly from a different color batch. Always order 10 to 15% extra.

Wrong rock size for the application

Small 1-2" rock shifts on pathways. Large 4-8" cobble traps leaves. Use 2-4" for most areas, 4-8" only for creek beds and focal points.

Ignoring delivery access requirements

A 5-ton delivery needs a dump truck with 10 ft wide access. Budget $200 to $400 for wheelbarrow transport if the truck can't reach your site.

Spreading too thin for weed suppression

A 1-inch layer provides zero weed control. Use 2-inch minimum for decorative, 3 to 4 inches over fabric for reliable suppression.
