A fence is a post count on a spacing, and the posts drive both cost and labour.

Fence estimates start from total run divided by post spacing, plus one for the end. Spacing is usually 6 to 8 feet, and going to 8 saves posts but needs stronger rails to stop sag. Every corner, gate and change of direction adds a post beyond the spacing calculation, and those are the ones people miss.

Depth matters more than height for longevity. A post should be buried about a third of its above-ground height, and below the frost line in cold climates, which is often deeper than a third. That decides post length, concrete per hole, and most of the digging labour.
